King Derby: an arcade-style horse race with a New Odds board
Six pixel horses and an odds board that changes every race. What the New Odds table, the bet buttons and the Last Results panel show before you press start.
King Derby looks like it came out of an 1980s arcade cabinet: chunky pixel horses, bright green infield, bushes drawn in a few colours. The betting side is more modern. Before each race you get a fresh odds board for every pair of horses, and you bet on the pair you think will come in first and second.
The New Odds board
In the screenshot above, the board is headed NEW ODDS. Numbers 6 down to 2 run across the top and 1 to 5 down the side, giving one box for each pair of horses. Each box shows the odds in yellow and your bet in red below.
In our capture the odds ran from 3 (horses 1 and 2) and 4 (1 and 4) up to 500 (4 and 6) and 1000 (5 and 6), with numbers like 10, 60, 125 and 175 in between. The figures change every race, which is why the header says "new".
Buttons and labels
- Four round buttons on the right set your bet size: 0, 1, 10 and 50.
- A FAST MODE switch shortens the race animation.
- Three coloured lines read STARTER 1, FINISHER 6 and SPRINTER 3. The screen does not explain them.
- A strip at the bottom reads "Jackpot X3 X4 X5, Free Horse", and a WIN box and a PRESS FOR START prompt run along the bottom edge.
On the right, LAST 5R RESULTS lists previous races as a pair and its odds. Our capture shows 4-5 at 60 and 5-6 at 125.
The race
Press start and the betting board slides away. The second capture shows the field bunched on a brown dirt track between rows of bushes and trees. The white horse carrying number 1 is near the front, number 2 in pink close behind, and number 4 on a blue horse trails the group. The WIN box stays at the bottom while they run.
Who it suits
Players who like a bit of theatre with their bet. A race takes longer than a card game, which slows the pace, and turning Fast Mode off is an easy way to slow it further.
Other race games

They are labels shown with a horse number each (Starter 1, Finisher 6, Sprinter 3 in our capture). The screenshots do not explain whether they affect the race, so treat them as flavour.
