Apple Machine: the arcade fruit board with a Big or Small gamble

Apple Machine will be familiar to anyone who grew up near a kedai with a fruit-board arcade machine. There are no reels. A square track of tiles runs around the edge of the screen, a light chases around it, and the tile it stops on pays the bets placed on that fruit.

In the middle stands a cartoon ringmaster in a purple top hat, doing a little dance.

The board

The tiles in the screenshots are apples, oranges, watermelons, bells, stars, red 77s and BAR, with "x3" versions of several of them and two LUCKY tiles, one top and one bottom. A panel of three BAR symbols with X50 and X25 labels sits on the left edge.

Placing bets

The betting column on the right lists the symbols from apple down to BAR. Next to each is a number, rising from 5 at the top to 50 at the bottom in the capture, which looks like the pay for that symbol. The up and down arrow buttons move between rows, and the chip buttons choose the stake: 50, 100, 500, 1000 or 5000. CLEAR wipes all bets.

On the left the display shows Jackpot (286184), BALANCE and WIN.

The second screenshot is the same board a little later. The jackpot display has crept up to 302632 and the balance is unchanged; nothing else moves until you place a bet.

Big or Small

Two buttons marked "Big 8-14" and "Small 1-7" sit beside a small two-digit display. It works like a high/low guess on a number, and old players used it to try to double a win. It is still a gamble on top of a gamble.

Before you play

• Set the chip size before anything else; 5000 is one tap away from 50.
• Turn Auto off if you want to watch each round.
• Try a couple of rounds at the smallest chip first.
